AERA Highlights Boost in NYC Kids' Fitness

The American Educational Research Association featured TASC’s “Eat, Fit, Fun” initiative in its Out-of-School Time Winter 2014 newsletter, shining the spotlight on preliminary results from New York City schools where kids are increasing their physical activity. AERA Newsletter

Supported by a three-year Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) grant from the U.S. Department of Education, four ExpandED schools are harnessing additional learning time to engage kids in weekly physical activities and improve their nutritional choices. In the school that added the greatest amount of time for physical activity into its weekly schedule (90 minutes), we saw a 15% increase in the proportion of students reaching the desired physical activity standard, a 10% increase in the proportion of students meeting the nutrition standard and a 5% increase in students meeting the cardiovascular standard.
