Spring Benefit 2016

Hundreds gathered at our Spring Benefit last week to celebrate Danny Meyer, CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group; Merryl Tisch, Chancellor Emeritus of the New York State Board of Regents; and Dr. Ramón González, principal of the Laboratory School of Finance and Technology. As we honored these leaders in business and education, guests mingled with student ambassadors – dancers and bookworms, reporters and storytellers, robotics teams and filmmakers, dramatists and app developers – who shared their enthusiasm for the enriched learning that happens during their expanded school day.
Three distinguished presenters introduced our honorees: David Rockwell, architect and founder of The Rockwell Group; Edwin Olvera, a 7th grader at the Laboratory School of Finance and Technology (MS 223) in the South Bronx; and Chris Caruso, Executive Director of Community Schools at the NYC Department of Education (and a familiar name to many of you as he was a beloved member of our ExpandED Schools staff not too long ago!) Roger Blissett, co-chair of our Board of Directors, served as emcee.
We raised awareness of the 6,000-hour learning gap affecting kids born into poverty, and more importantly, we raised more than $460,000, which will continue to expand education and enrichment opportunities for hundreds of more students. You can see the fun we had in the photos, and the infectious energy of our students.
