The next great designer, documentary film maker, mobile app developer, artist, scientist or programmer might be sitting in a New York City classroom this summer. Will you be the one to inspire them?

ExpandED Schools is looking for teachers with an interest in STEM and technology to work this summer in the Bronx, Upper Manhattan and Queens, and an ELA teacher to work in Queens, all as a part of CareerCLUE (Community Learning, Understanding, and Experience).

CareerCLUE is a NYC Department of Education summer-learning and work-exposure program for high school students. It delivers high-quality summer enrichment experiences that combine credit, paid incentives and opportunities to learn about careers in a variety of subjects.

This summer, students aged 14-15 years old in Renewal and Community Schools can participate in CareerCLUE Explorations led by Solar One. CareerCLUE Explorations introduces students to green careers – careers that benefit the environment and conserve natural resources – through guest speakers, project-based learning, field trips and service learning.

Students 16 years and older can participate in CareerCLUE Apprenticeships. As apprentices, students learn the skills necessary to participate in STEM and creative fields, such as developing mobile applications, coding, and visual and media arts. In addition, they also learn how to teach these skills to younger students. Successful completion of the summer apprenticeship leads to paid internships in the fall teaching and working with younger students.

CareerCLUE Explorations and CareerCLUE Apprenticeships programs are led by expert practitioners in their field and co-taught with certified teachers. ExpandED Schools is currently looking for DOE teachers who are certified to teach at the high school level (grades 7-12) to work with us this summer for up to 100 hours between July 5th and August 10th.

Teachers in CareerCLUE ensure that students are progressing toward learning goals. Co-teachers can provide input, but would not be responsible for curriculum development or day-to-day lesson plans. An instructional schedule will be determined with the apprenticeship lead instructor. Professional development for CareerCLUE Explorations takes place on 6/29, 6/30, 7/6 and 7/7; and PD for CareerCLUE Apprenticeships takes place on 6/29 and 6/30.

If you know teachers who might be interested, please email either Candace Brazier Thurman, Program Director, cthurman@expandedschools.org or Deborah Taylor, Program Manager, dtaylor@expandedschools.org.
