High School Students: Apply for Summer Apprenticeships Today!

Candace Brazier-Thurman is Program Director of ExpandED Options.

The application deadline has been extended for ExpandED Options summer apprenticeships!

ExpandED Options offers rising 10th and 11th graders a chance to earn a credit learning a skill and how to teach that skill to younger kids. Students will work with artists, filmmakers and engineers. Teens who complete the program will earn a paid job teaching after school in the fall of 2016.

To qualify, teens must:

  • Be 16 years old by October 1st, 2016
  • Have an interest and willingness to explore their summer apprenticeship topic

This summer we are running five apprenticeships:

Creativity Through Engineering, Science & Technology (CrEST) with NYU Tandon School of Engineering
(Downtown Brooklyn)
Apply principles of physical computing, circuitry and electronics to design and build mechanical devices. Learn to use 3D printers and coding to make your devices interactive.

  • July 11, 2016 – August 5, 2016, Monday-Friday, 10AM-3PM

Coding X(by) Design at Queens Library (Richmond Hill)

Learn the fundamentals of computer science through designing Scratch and web-based applications of your choosing. Potential projects can include, but are not limited to, creating animations, video games, musical compositions or patternmaking for fashion design. New Media Arts with Educational Video Center (Chelsea)

Explore a community issue through documentary filmmaking, web design & Photoshop.

  • July 7, 2016 – August 11, 2016, Tuesday-Thursday, 9AM-12PM

Urban Ecology of the Bronx with Beam Center (Bronx)
Learn about ecology while building a rooftop garden. Visit parks and gardens.

  • July 7, 2016 – August 12, 2016, , Monday - Thursday, 9AM-3PM

Visual Arts with Studio in a School (Williamsburg)
Develop advanced visual art skills such as printmaking, painting, drawing and collage.
Visit museums and galleries.

  • July 7 – August 16, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9:30AM – 3PM
