Over 300 industry leaders, education visionaries, elected officials and friends gathered at our Spring Benefit at Sony Square last week to celebrate “Innovation in Education” and to honor Jay Kriegel, Senior Advisor to The Related Companies; Diana Taylor, Vice-Chair of Solera Capital and Akhere Akhuemokhan, an 8th Grade Teacher at The Highbridge Green School. Soledad O’Brien, CEO of Starfish Media Group, emceed the program and guests were treated to a lively welcome by the students of Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower School and their African drumming. There were also student ambassadors showcasing their book clubs, poetry, fashion creations and entrepreneurial products, who shared their passion for enriched and happy learning that supports success at school and in life.

The students from Thurgood Marshall Academy ignited the program by performing “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray, followed by our honorees sharing their unique perspectives on why expanded learning is critical to bridging the 6,000-hour learning gap affecting kids born into poverty. Then Christy Williams Coombs of Sotheby’s led an exciting live auction featuring an incredible ski vacation, a private dining experience with Chef Vincent, owner of Vai and Coarse, and access to the final foray of the Brooklyn Museum’s David Bowie Is exhibit in addition to a selection of programmatic items. ExpandED Schools’ new President & CEO, Jane Martínez Dowling then took the stage and shared her vision of doubling our impact of reaching over 1.1 million kids to over 2.2 million kids!

Thanks to your generous support, we raised over $550,000 that will continue to expand enrichment opportunities for even more students in New York City.

We are so grateful to our Event Co-Chairs, Pamela Bingham, Rona Nelson and Robert Steel and the Benefit Committee. Thank you to our signature sponsor Bloomberg Philanthropies, as well as our many other sponsors and partners. Click here to see more photos. We can’t wait to celebrate with you again next year!
