Jane Martínez Dowling Named as New President and CEO of ExpandED Schools

Dowling brings over twenty-five years of diverse education and leadership experience to ExpandED Schools

New York, NY, May 3, 2018 - ExpandED Schoolsa New York City nonprofit dedicated to closing the learning gap and assuring that all kids have opportunities to discover their talents and develop their full potential, announced today that Jane Martínez Dowling, a transformational leader who has provided opportunities for over 25 years to New York City children living in underserved communities, will become the next President and Chief Executive Officer, effective July 9, 2018. She will succeed Lucy Friedman, ExpandED Schools founding President since 1998.

Ms. Dowling brings over 25 years of experience in education and non-profit management, beginning her career as a charter corps member of the Teach for America program, followed by her leadership as the Executive Director at Student Sponsor Partners, and then at the Academy of St. Mount Ursula, where she served as President. She comes to ExpandED Schools from the New York charter school network of KIPP, where she served as the Executive Director of the KIPP Through College program before being promoted to the Head of Programs. As Ms. Dowling stated, “I have seen first-hand how a quality education can change the life trajectories of so many, and have dedicated my career to ensuring all children have access to life-changing opportunities”.   Ms. Dowling has also served on numerous non-profit boards, both locally and nationally.  She is currently on the Board of Directors at KIPP NYC, the national board of Cristo Rey Network, and serves as a Regent at Georgetown University, her alma mater.

Both Co-Chairs, Roger Blissett and Randy Nelson, expressed enthusiasm on the Board’s decision appointing Ms. Dowling. “Our Board is thrilled to appoint Jane Martínez Dowling as the organization’s President and CEO. Her deep interest in the work of ExpandED Schools combined with her accomplished and aligned experience, positions her well to lead and further advance the organization,” said Randolph Nelson, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for ExpandED Schools.

Founded as The After-School Corporation (TASC) in 1998 through a challenge grant from the Open Society Foundations (then the Open Society Institute), ExpandED Schools was the first organization established to build a citywide system of daily comprehensive after-school programs for children and youth in kindergarten through high school. ExpandED Schools laid the foundation for New York City to construct the nations’ largest publicly funded K-12 after-school system. In this process, ExpandED Schools also helped develop program standards for the U.S. Department of Education. The enduring goal of ExpandED Schools has been to ensure that all children have opportunities to discover their talents and develop their full potential through public education.

“Jane is a first generation American and life-long New Yorker who intimately knows the tremendous impact education has on children and believes that it is crucial for opportunity-rich lives. She is a strong proponent of expanded learning, particularly as a time to teach skills such as resilience, team-building and perseverance”, said Roger Blissett, Co-Chair, ExpandED Schools Board of Directors.

“I am excited to lead an organization whose mission is to create a wide variety of learning opportunities for students where they build social capital and explore passions that lead to careers,” said Ms. Dowling. She will continue ExpandED Schools’ rigorous, data-driven research to “demonstrate outcomes that directly lead to success for college, career, and lifelong success.”

The Board of Directors and the Executive Team look forward to introducing Ms. Dowling at the annual benefit on Tuesday June 12, in New York City.
