ExpandED Schools is seeking financial literacy volunteers who will make a difference in the life of a child.

Financial literacy is a life skill that's more vital than ever before. According to the most recent PISA survey, more than 1 in 6 students in the U.S. failed to reach the baseline level of proficiency in financial literacy. This makes every day financial tasks, from managing spending decisions to understanding an invoice, incredibly difficult. And not surprisingly, the gap in proficiency was more profound among students of low socio-economic means.

To address this need, ExpandED Schools has developed Market Makers, an entrepreneur-based financial literacy program for students in underserved schools and communities. Market Makers will provide kids with an opportunity to gain financial literacy skills in a hands-on and fun way, benefiting their lives, their families and their communities. But the program’s success depends on the generosity of committed volunteers who will act as business coaches in Market Makers clubs, providing valuable input in running a business, sharing information and ideas about their career and motivating students.

This program will operate on a semester-long schedule and students will meet with volunteers from the business community, either at school or on field trips to the volunteer’s workplace. Market Makers culminates in a citywide marketplace, where students from all participating schools come together on a Saturday to sell their goods to each other and the broader community.

There are many ways to volunteer your time and talents to help students develop strong financial skills they'll use throughout their lives:

  • Coach or assist at a Market Makers school club.
  • Be a Market Makers Ambassador by distributing this flyer to colleagues in your network.
  • Share this blog in your organizational/community newsletter.
  • Spread the word on social media using the hashtag #MarketMakers.

The only qualification required is your desire to make an impact on the life of a child and an eagerness to connect with students from diverse backgrounds and work toward a common goal. You don't need any fancy degrees; you don't even need to know what to say. All you need to do is contact Erin Phillips at volunteer@expandedschools.org to learn how to become a volunteer and sign up for our 4-hour Market Makers training session on September 10th.

Make a difference in your community. Become a part of Market Makers today!
