More and Better Learning: Reflections and Improvement

Saskia Traill

Saskia Traill is TASC's Vice President for Policy and Research.

In 2011, TASC launched a national demonstration of ExpandED Schools in three cities: Baltimore, New Orleans and New York City. We worked with 10 schools to expand the school day, engage the community and enhance learning in each school. In Baltimore and New Orleans, we worked with local intermediaries to support schools and build political and financial sustainability for the effort.

What we learned is that our model offers a powerful strategy for schools to advance their culture, foster healthy social and emotional development of young people, and promote academic progress. And over three years, as we’ve built growth mindsets in the children we educate, we have also fostered within the school communities we’ve supported a belief in their continued growth as well. These schools can assess progress and evolve, continually building skills for future success. These implementation findings are coupled with strong academic, social and emotional gains for students, and strong ratings of school climate by parents, teachers and students.

In this year three report, we sought to capture the success and promising practices along with the challenges and opportunities for continuous improvement. Our hope is that others in the field may find our lessons useful and also share their own insights that will no doubt help us along the way. If you are also implementing expanded learning, please let us know in the comments below what resonates in your own work or what you find useful.
