Students in the NIA Community Services Network expanded learning program at IS 30 in Brooklyn are clustered together around a table. The machine is set: five ping-pong balls are ready to be released, held in place by a tightly wound rubber band and one popsicle stick. Two students release the “kicking stick” and – boom! – all five ping-pong balls shoot across the table and land in a goal taped to the far side.

“Score!” They successfully met the design challenge: to create a “kicking machine” capable of landing a ping-pong ball in a goal. This fun, design-based learning activity bridges school day science curriculum and after-school enrichment, a central strategy of ExpandED Schools’ program Design2Learn. In this case, the lesson on simple machines during science class connects to a hands-on, design-based activity in the after-school setting – co-taught by classroom teachers and after-school educators – that sparks student interest and engagement with the subject.

Want to get involved? You’re in luck! ExpandED Schools, the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE) and the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), are currently inviting applications from schools and community partners to join us in Design2Learn, an evaluation of a two-year program designed to boost students’ interest, engagement and academic performance in science during the middle school years.

For an overview and more details about the Design2Learn program and study, visit this flyer and the application. The application process includes:
