Providing youth with leadership opportunities and autonomy is a win-win situation. Kids experience increased engagement and initiative, improved self-management and communication skills, and feel a greater sense of competence. But the impact is not on the individual alone; it can lead to tangible positive differences in the community. Boston After School & Beyond’s report entitled “Strategies for Incorporating Youth Voice into Program Design” offers tested and specific ideas to promote leadership and choice, for all grade levels, in expanded day and summer programs.

Angela Duckworth has been talking about the concept of grit for more than a decade. She has studied it, promoted it and now, just published a book about it, aptly titled, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. It all began when she was teaching math in a NYC public school and noticed that successful students weren’t necessarily the ones who had the most talent, but rather, the ones who displayed the most passion and perseverance. The book offers ways to promote grit in young people, and explores “what goes through your head when you fall down, and how that – not talent or luck – makes all the difference.”
