What's Lucy Reading?

Lucy Friedman

Lucy Friedman is president of ExpandED Schools.

We’re pleased to share our 2016 Annual Report, which celebrates the passion and curiosity of students and educators in ExpandED Schools, and expresses our gratitude to all of those who have supported us this past year in our mission to close the learning gap. In just one school year, we expanded opportunities for more than 117,000 students, trained over 4,000 educators and provided more than 9,000 hours of STEM activities. Scroll through the report and you’ll see that our students are truly one in a million, now more than ever as we reach our one-millionth student this school year.

Wes Moore, the new CEO of Robin Hood, was a Rhodes Scholar, a paratrooper and a White House Fellow. He’s the author of a book entitled The Other Wes Moore, which explores how two men with the same name, and who grew up in the same neighborhood, could have followed two extremely different paths in life. One became a business leader and social entrepreneur; the other is serving a life sentence in prison. Mr. Moore asks challenging questions, and explores tough truths, and the book serves as a guidepost for anyone working with young people who live and learn in under-resourced communities.
Fostering social and emotional competencies in school-age children has been at the very core of our goals, and the expanded learning day offers a fertile environment in which to build skills like resiliency, teamwork, empathy and a growth mindset. As we incubate new initiatives in this area, we appreciate the light that the Wallace Foundation is shining on these issues. They recently published a report titled Navigating SEL From the Inside Out, which looks inside and across 25 leading SEL programs around the country, sharing best practices and key learnings.
