Design2Learn kicks off year 2!

Three-dimensional structures designed to stand up to an earthquake (from a do it yourself shake table) and Godzilla (the weight of blocks). A dowel structure designed with windows and doors to withstand a zombie-apocalypse. Miniature cars, composed of simple machines and household materials, powered by baking soda and vinegar. An investigation of a slime product gone wrong. What do all these inventive creations have in common? They were ideated, built and tested by imaginative educators trained in design-based teaching as part of ExpandED Schools initiative, Design2Learn. Read full post

When speaking about children, James Baldwin noted that “we will all profit by or pay for what they become.” This weekend’s white supremacist rally in Charlottesville—set against a national backdrop of escalating, discriminatory rhetoric and action towards Muslims, transgender individuals, immigrants and other marginalized groups—highlights the potency of Baldwin’s words, as well as the duty of parents and educators to engage in challenging conversations with children about racism, bias and how to stand up for what’s right. House Appropriations Committee Cuts and Next Steps

While the House bill improved on the Trump Administration proposal by rejecting its shortsighted attempt to completely eliminate the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) Program, it still results in a $191 million cut from the previous year. Ultimately, the House bill falls short in providing the critical support needed to provide high-quality and evidence-based after-school programming for 1.6 million children in families in high-need communities across the country. Introducing 'ExpandED Pathways: Computer Science'

Our own Katie Brohawn, Senior Director of Research, summarized this research in a post last August highlighting a study showing that students in low-income neighborhoods can lose two months of reading achievement over the course of a single summer. Luckily, we also know a wide range of strategies for keeping kids engaged in joyful literacy learning during the months off of school. Pathways to the Future
