Job Opportunity: Pathways Associate

ExpandED Schools is dedicated to closing the learning gap by increasing access to enriched educational experiences. We give children more hours in the school day, bring more role models into the classroom, and infuse their learning with enrichments in literacy, STEM, arts, and sports and opportunities to build character and leadership skills. In our first decade, we created the nation’s first citywide system of K-12 after-school programs and leveraged more than $500 million in private and public funds. Today, we continue to reimagine learning time – in school, after school and during the summer – developing scalable and sustainable models that provide more quality learning. Since our founding in 1998, we have reached more than one million students and trained more than 30,000 educators and teachers. We: 

  • EXPAND the school day: Adding 2.5 hours each day; closing the learning gap by 450 hours/school year.
  • ENGAGE the community: Bringing additional role models – tutors, coaches, college students and teaching artists – into the classroom.
  • ENHANCE the learning: Balancing the curriculum with the arts, sports, STEM and character-building enrichments. 

ExpandED Schools is seeking a Pathways Associate to support the ExpandED Schools Pathways Initiative, an initiative designed to recruit and support people of color who are interested in education or youth development careers. Working closely with the Pathways Initiative Team, school and community partners, the Associate will oversee the recruitment of participants for the Initiative, build and maintain partnerships with new and existing field placement sites, support and track Initiative alumni, and provide other administrative and event support as needed. Reporting to the Director of Pathways Programs, the Associate will play a pivotal role as ExpandED Schools expands and deepens its workforce development and equity work. The role is ideal for a flexible, innovative, and detail-oriented person with roots and connections within New York City. Fluency in both English and Spanish is strongly preferred. While this role is designed as a full-time role, we are willing to consider part-time or contract work for the right candidate.


Oversee recruitment of diverse participants for innovative Initiative designed to support diverse educators with an interest in education and youth development careers

  • Recruit qualified participants for the Pathways Initiative through diverse strategies including but not limited to: attending community events throughout NYC; performing outreach on social media and online job platforms; and visiting college campuses and local community centers 
  • Manage the publicity and online application for Pathways participants 
  • Serve as point person for questions related to Pathways Initiative
  • Support execution of applicant screening, interviews, and selection

Build and maintain partnerships to advance equity in afterschool and ensure our participants are receiving the support needed to reach their goals 

  • Work closely with Initiative Director to recruit new field placement sites for the Initiative and support existing field placement sites
  • Liaise with other ExpandED Schools departments to support the development of meaningful partnerships between ExpandED Schools and community partners

Build leaders and champions within the education sector by supporting Initiative alumni and tracking alumni outcomes

  • Manage a database of alumni
  • Manage data collection for all Initiative alumni, including the dissemination of surveys and outreach as necessary
  • Provide outreach and support to alumni as needed and/or appropriate
  • Support the planning and development of Alumni events throughout the year


  • Commitment to educational equity
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate details both orally and in writing
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills; ability to execute tasks efficiently and with strong attention to detail
  • At least two years experience working or volunteering in New York City. Deep knowledge of at least one of the communities our schools serve a plus; Experience working in NYC public schools or afterschool strongly preferred
  • Experience building and supporting partnerships between schools, community organizations and cultural institutions
  • Flexibility, adaptability and comfort with complexity and change
  • Creative thinking coupled with a sense of humor, strong interpersonal skills, and the desire to work collaboratively 
  • Computer skills in Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout New York City 3-4 days per week between January and April
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish strongly preferred

This position requires regular use of public transportation and work in school/community buildings that may require climbing stairs.

Salary: $50,000
