Job Opportunity: Research Analyst

ExpandED Schools is dedicated to closing the learning gap by increasing access to enriched education experiences. We give children more hours in the school day, bring more role models into the classroom, and infuse their learning with enrichments in literacy, STEM, arts, and sports and opportunities to build character and leadership skills. In our first decade, we created the nation’s first citywide system of K-12 after-school programs and leveraged more than $500 million in private and public funds. Today, we continue to reimagine learning time – in school, after school and during the summer – developing scalable and sustainable models that provide more quality learning. Since our founding in 1998, we have reached more than one million students and trained more than 30,000 educators and teachers. We:

  • EXPAND the school day: Adding 2.5 hours each day; closing the learning gap by 450 hours/school year.
  • ENGAGE the community: Bringing additional role models – tutors, coaches, college students and teaching artists – into the classroom.
  • ENHANCE the learning: Balancing the curriculum with the arts, sports, STEM and character-building enrichments.

Purpose of Position

The Research Analyst reports to the VP of Research to provide support on various research and evaluation projects.


  • Working as part of a dynamic research team, supporting analyses of multiple internal and external evaluation projects
  • Collect, enter, clean and manage survey data
  • Design, implement, and interpret/write up analyses of large education data sets
  • Coordinate and track data collection efforts across a variety of initiatives
  • Support continuous improvement efforts within a fast-paced environment by analyzing data, preparing charts/tables, and assist in the dissemination of results to both practitioners and researchers
  • Build and maintain robust datasets
  • Coordinate a cohort of field observers collecting on-site program observation data
  • Conduct site visits of structured observations to assess program quality in after-school and expanded learning time programs
  • Conduct literature reviews on a variety of topics related to youth development, after-school, and education
  • Read and write up findings from recent research in the field to share with a non-research audience
  • Perform other tasks as needed and directed by supervisor


  • Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years experience required, Master’s degree strongly preferred
  • Strong research, analytic and writing skills
  • Experience and interest in evaluating programs in the fields of youth development, after-school, and/or education
  • Knowledge of field research and quantitative research techniques
  • Strong working knowledge of SPSS (including use of syntax) and advanced excel (i.e. pivot tables, VLOOKUP)
  • Experience working with large data files (>50,000 cases)
  • Experience with Tableau or other data visualization software
  • Strong working knowledge of data management software (including ability to run queries to merge files)
  • Familiarity with NYC DOE data or other complex school district data preferred
  • Experience with NVivo or other qualitative data analysis software a plus
  • Comfort working in a fast-pace environment, balancing multiple projects and responding to ad-hoc data requests
  • Willingness to perform administrative tasks as part of evaluation project management
  • Willingness and ability to travel within New York City via public transportation, as well as occasional national/overnight travel
