Job Opportunity: Research Associate

Over the last two decades, ExpandED Schools’ efforts and strategic outreach have led to increased recognition of the academic, social, and emotional benefits of afterschool, increased funding, and new models for school-community partnership. 

The pandemic further highlighted the importance of afterschool and ExpandED’s vital function. Afterschool provides opportunities for caregivers to work, keeps kids safe, and builds strong and equitable communities. The organization and its partners brought stability to working families during a period of ongoing turmoil. Its programs served as nurturing centers for kids to work on projects that build their academic and social skills, talk to mentors who help them process their feelings, think about their next steps and careers, and connect with friends.


ExpandED is looking for a full-time Research Associate, who will support implementation of various research and evaluation projects designed to drive policy and practice that improves the quality of learning experiences for children in New York City and advances educational equity. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Support continuous improvement efforts within a fast-paced environment by analyzing data, preparing charts/tables, and assist in the dissemination of results to both practitioners and researchers. 
  • Support development and implementation of multi-method research designs and identify analyses to answer targeted programmatic and policy questions; proactively ensure that all data collection tools align to research questions.
  • Build and maintain robust datasets and support management of data collection activities for external evaluations.
  • Coordinate a cohort of field observers collecting on-site program observation data
  • Conduct site visits of structured observations to assess program quality in after-school and expanded learning time programs. 
  • Develop, test, and use data collection tools and protocols (survey instruments, interview guides and observation protocols).
  • Maintain relationships with evaluation clients, internally and externally, including progress toward goals, making sense of research findings, and developing steps for improvement. 
  • Conduct interviews and site visits/observations with city and organization leaders, program administrators, program staff, youth participants, and other key stakeholders.
  • Conduct literature reviews on a variety of topics related to youth development, after-school, and education 
  • Read and write up findings from recent research in the field to share with a non-research audience
  • Assist in the submission of Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications and conduct all evaluations in accordance with appropriate human subject’s regulations.
  • Analyze and write evaluation results in a variety of formats to funders, policymakers, practitioners, and education researchers through written reports 
  • Conduct quantitative analyses as needed 
  • Perform other tasks as needed and directed by supervisor

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field with 1-3 years of experience
  • Strong research, analytic and writing skills 
  • Experience and interest in evaluating programs in the fields of youth development, after-school, and/or education 
  • Knowledge of field research and quantitative research techniques 
  • Strong working knowledge of SPSS (including use of syntax) or other related data platforms and advanced Excel (i.e. pivot tables, VLOOKUP)
  • Experience cleaning and analyzing large data files (>50,000 cases)
  • Experience with Power BI or other data visualization software
  • Strong working knowledge of data management software (including ability to run queries to merge files); experience working with Airtable is a plus
  • Familiarity with NYC DOE data or other complex school district data preferred 
  • Experience with Atlas.ti, NVivo or other qualitative data analysis software a plus

Salary Range: $52,000 - $65,000

Location: Hybrid work environment; currently, the organization is primarily operating remotely, with occasional in-person meetings at the NYC office. This role also requires seasonal travel to various NYC schools across the five boroughs for site observations.
