SUMMARY:CORE PD: Relationship Building with Youth
DESCRIPTION:The number\, consistency\, and intensity of positive relationships in young people’s lives are linked with a range of positive academic\, social\, and emotional outcomes. This workshop will evaluate the factors that lead to and best practices for nurturing sustainable\, positive relationships with students and explore how communication directly affects student behavior. Using the Search Institute’s Developmental Relationships framework\, participants will explore strategies for building\, sustaining\, and repairing relationships. Attendees will also explore the skills and strategies that can help you better communicate and get through to your students. We will present tools and techniques to positively redirect negative behavior and will provide opportunities to practice reframing our language to be more impactful and effective. \nSchool-Age Child Care training regulations satisfied: 3 \nPlease note that active participation during the session is required in order to receive letters of completion. SUMMARY:CORE PD: Addressing Transphobia
DESCRIPTION:According to the 2019 National School Climate Survey\, 84% of trans students felt unsafe at school because of their gender. Compounded with issues of racism\, transgender youth of color are more likely to subjected to racial discrimination than their cisgender peers. In this session\, we will read a true\, teen-written story about coming out as transgender and discuss how to create a healthy environment where trans and gender expansive students can thrive. We will review key terms like cisgender\, transgender\, gender queer\, and nonbinary\, as well the impact transphobia has on education and a student’s sense of belonging. Participants will leave the session with a deeper understanding of trans and gender expansive students and actionable steps they can take to support them. \nSchool-Age Child Care training regulations satisfied: 3 \nPlease note that active participation during the session is required in order to receive letters of completion.
