Market Makers

Financial literacy meets entrepreneurship meets volunteerism in this program, which was kicked off in the 2016-2017 school year through funding from TD Securities. Middle school students in participating Market Makers clubs work with mentors from the greater New York City business community who volunteer their time and expertise to consult students on the creation of a business that sells products made by the students during their expanded learning classes, such as fashion or culinary arts.

Students become entrepreneurs as business mentors help them gain practical life skills that will prepare them for the future. Students improve their understanding of how financial decisions affect their lives, their families and their communities, and they strengthen their appreciation of financial independence. Mentors motivate students to think about futures in the business by sharing their experiences and inviting the students to take a field trip to their offices. The activities draw upon students’ creativity and interests, which in turn, spark motivation, confidence and knowledge of basic financial principles.
