Evaluation Findings from the Frontiers in Urban Science Exploration (FUSE) 2.5 Program

The TASC Research team prepared this evaluation of the Frontiers in Urban Science Exploration (FUSE) 2.5 program for the 2009-10 school year. This evaluation focuses on both staff and student outcomes, and also seeks to identify best practices for delivering STEM in after-school for future editions of this program.

Based on survey and case study results, the following actions are recommended:

  • Provide more specialized STEM trainings. Youth workers and site coordinators believe that trainings should be age-specific to ensure that the challenge level of the activities is appropriate for their students. Site coordinators would also benefit from a beginning of the year training or orientation to help introduce them to different curricula and to establish communication between their sites and the STEM trainers.
  • Offer more comprehensive technical assistance. Trainers should aim to provide each site with a technical assistance visit during the first few months of the school year to give them feedback on their implementation of STEM activities.
  • Greater focus on careers in science – On their end-of-year surveys, students indicated that the program did not necessarily increase their interest in a science career when they were older. While this is not a program goal, it would be helpful to introduce both students and youth workers to potential careers in the field.
