What is the Science of Reading, and why does it matter in out-of-school time? This foundational training introduces participants to decades of reading research and explores how children learn to read. Educators will gain an understanding of the essential components of skilled reading, including oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Participants will also examine how afterschool programs can intentionally reinforce classroom learning through engaging, literacy-rich experiences.
