Brooklyn, NY — A New Chapter Begins
At the Park Slope Educational Complex at M.S. 88 in Brooklyn, the buzz of creativity and learning fills the air as students dive into the new LIT C.R.E.W. program, guided by their seasoned literacy educator, Christal Buxton. A dedicated member of the ExpandED Schools family for over a decade, Christal has been a driving force in redefining literacy for the After 3 sector. This year, with the guidance of Allison Philippin, her Program Manager at ExpandED Schools, she brings her expertise to a group of young learners through an innovative project in the Visual Arts creative group named “Kreative Krafts.”
Bringing Stories to Life Through Creativity
Christal’s students are exploring the heartwarming and quirky world of Everything on a Waffle by Polly Horvath. The book’s rich themes, relatable characters, and captivating storyline have inspired the students to embark on a hands-on journey, blending literacy with artistry.
Through the Kreative Krafts project, students are honing practical skills like crocheting and candle-making. But these aren’t just any candles or crochet pieces—they are infused with scents and designs inspired by the book’s themes and key items. The group carefully analyzes the text, identifying elements that resonate deeply, from the comfort of waffles to the resilience of its characters.

Inspiration from the Page to the Craft
Each candle crafted by the students tells a story. For example, scents reminiscent of maple syrup or the sea reflect pivotal moments and settings in Everything on a Waffle. Crocheted items, such as cozy waffle-patterned squares or sea-inspired hues, further capture the book’s essence.
“The students are not just learning a craft; they’re connecting deeply with the text and expressing their interpretations through their creations,” says Christal. “It’s incredible to see their faces light up as they bring the story to life in such a tangible way.”
A Leap into Literacy with LEAP
This innovative project is made possible through the collaboration with MS 88’s community-based organization (CBO) partner, LEAP. Together with Christal, they’re proving that literacy education can go beyond traditional reading and writing to include dynamic, project-based experiences.

A Program to Celebrate
The new LIT C.R.E.W. program, launched this year, emphasizes creativity, research, and student-led exploration. MS 88’s participation showcases how schools can integrate hands-on learning to deepen students’ connection to literature.
As the students at MS 88 continue their journey with Everything on a Waffle, their candles and crochet pieces will stand as symbols of how stories can inspire creativity and skill-building in unexpected ways.
