What we Do

About ExpandED Schools

ExpandED Schools is an intermediary nonprofit organization that delivers full-scale learning and development opportunities to students and educators throughout New York City public schools. ExpandED’s staff and partners work every day to ensure the system of school-community partnership is vibrant and supported so that all New York City children thrive.

We believe that every child deserves access to a well-rounded education that goes beyond the traditional school day. By partnering with schools, communities, and educators, we create innovative programs that extend learning time and enhance academic, social, and emotional development.

A $125 million investment in 1998 sought to address systemic inequities by making afterschool an integral part of New York City public education with the founding of the organization now known as ExpandED Schools (formerly The After-School Corporation, TASC).

For over a quarter century, ExpandED has redefined the afterschool experience in the largest city-funded afterschool system in the nation. Supporting more than 119,000 children and 900 programs throughout New York City, our work ensures that students in underserved communities have access to innovative, engaging ways of learning to enable them to reach their full potential.

ExpandED's Current Model:

  1. K-8 Enrichment: We provide comprehensive program support to afterschool providers, empowering them to offer engaging STEM, literacy, and social-emotional learning opportunities. We are working to ensure the holistic development of students by strengthening the foundation for enrichment after school.
  2. High-Impact Tutoring (HIT): We launched a new strategy last year to establish a citywide system of school-community tutoring partnerships focused on literacy and math. Through this initiative, students can grow socially, emotionally, and academically, benefiting from the expertise of both schools and local communities.
  3. Educator Development: We support the system of professional development opportunities, technical assistance, and career support for non-certified educators. Our aim is to enhance their skills, enrich their knowledge, and provide the necessary resources for their career growth.
  4. Work-Based Learning (WBL): We facilitate a seamlessly connected system of career-connected learning opportunities for young people in grades 6 through 12. By collaborating with schools and community partners, we enable students to gain practical experience and explore potential career paths.

By leveraging our comprehensive suite of programs, we empower students, educators, and community partners to thrive.
