This August, ExpandED Schools proudly launched the Lit C.R.E.W. Literacy Institute, a three-day professional learning experience that set the stage for an exciting new academic year! With educators, program leaders, and partners gathered together, the institute was buzzing with creativity, collaboration, and a shared commitment to making literacy come alive for students across New York City.
From the very first morning, participants were welcomed virtually, but with the energy of a community ready to build something bold. The theme was clear: Connect. Read to Research. Explore and Wrap Up. (Lit C.R.E.W. at its core!)
Day One: Connect
We kicked things off by building connections among educators, with the vision of Lit C.R.E.W. in mind. Interactive activities, storytelling icebreakers, and guided discussions reminded us that literacy isn’t just about reading words on a page; it’s about connecting stories, ideas, and people.
Day Two: Time to Research
The second day dove into the heart of the model. Educators explored strategies for sparking inquiry through texts and learned how to guide students from reading into deeper research-based projects. The room was alive with ideas, teachers brainstorming ways to turn novels, short stories, and even current events into jumping-off points for critical thinking and creativity.
Day Three: Wrap Up & Reflect
The final day was all about reflection and celebration. Participants practiced student-centered strategies for wrapping up lessons and guiding young people to share their insights with peers. The day closed with a collective vision for the year ahead, educators sharing commitments to bring literacy to life in ways that empower students to think, question, and create. Of course, no three-day institute would be complete without plenty of laughter, collaboration, and a few surprises along the way. By the end, participants left not only with new tools and strategies but with a renewed excitement to launch the school year with Lit C.R.E.W. at the center of their programs. As we step into the academic year, the momentum from the Lit C.R.E.W. Institute reminds us of what’s possible when we come together with passion and purpose.
