Q&A
Q: What inspired you to run the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon for ExpandED Schools, and what does this opportunity mean to you personally?
A: Running is often viewed as an individual pursuit that requires long hours of solitary training and a singular focus on personal goals. However, after more than 40 years of endurance training and racing, I have come to appreciate a different kind of motivation. The opportunity to slow down, run with purpose, and support a meaningful cause like ExpandED alongside a team of fellow runners is both inspiring and rewarding. It makes running a shared effort to make a positive impact, reminding me that some of the most meaningful accomplishments are achieved through service to others.
Q: How does ExpandED Schools’ mission resonate with your own experiences or values, and how has that connection shaped your training journey?
A: My mother was a teacher for more than 40 years, spending much of her career in special education. Throughout her life, she emphasized the importance of finding joy in learning, exercising patience in teaching, and, above all, encouraging every student to reach their potential. Teachers who dedicate their time, energy, and compassion to inspiring young people form the foundation of our future. Reflecting on their sacrifices and commitment provides a powerful source of motivation and a reminder of the importance of working as part of a team to support the success, growth, and future of so many young lives.
Q: As you prepare for 26.2 miles across all five boroughs, what message are you hoping to carry forward for the young people ExpandED Schools supports?
A: I believe the message is that everyone needs a formula for success. Hard work, guidance, dedication, and genuine enjoyment of the process all play essential roles in achieving meaningful goals. Success rarely happens overnight. While a marathon may last only a few hours, it is the months of preparation, discipline, and perseverance leading up to the finish line that truly make the difference. The journey itself is what builds the strength, character, and resilience needed not only to reach a goal, but to continue pursuing new ones.
Q: What would you want supporters to understand about the importance of this marathon fundraising effort and the difference it will make for students and educators across New York City?
A: ExpandED’s mission to increase access to enriched educational opportunities for New York City’s children, support and train educators, and serve as a strong advocate for youth development provides a solid foundation for the growth and success of future generations. By empowering students and providing teachers with tools they need to succeed, ExpandED helps create brighter opportunities for young New Yorkers.
The quality of education and support available to today’s children will shape the future of the city. Every donation to ExpandED is an investment in that future and in the young people whose talent, creativity, and leadership will continue to make New York a vibrant and thriving city.
