Susie Brandmeyer, will be running on behalf of ExpandED Schools in the TCS New York City Marathon. This Q&A explains why she chose to run for such an important cause.

Q: What inspired you to run the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon for ExpandED Schools, and what does this opportunity mean to you personally?
A: My husband Kevin and I have been involved with ExpandED for over ten years. I’m continually inspired by the dedicated people who work tirelessly to ensure students across NYC have access to high-quality, high-impact after-school programs. From the staff who connect community programs with schools, to teachers who integrate those programs into their curriculum, to the educators working directly with students—ExpandEd connects all of these people to ensure NYC students thrive even after the school day has ended.
Q: How does ExpandED Schools’ mission resonate with your own experiences or values, and how has that connection shaped your training journey?
A: As a first-grade teacher, I understand the importance of instilling a joy of learning and tapping into students’ passions and interests. ExpandED reinforces school-day skills through high-impact tutoring, quality after-school programs, and hands-on, project-based learning so every student can thrive.
Q: As you prepare for 26.2 miles across all five boroughs, what message are you hoping to carry forward for the young people ExpandED Schools supports?
A: I am hoping to educate people about ExpandEd and shine a light on the opportunities and programming that ExpandEd provides for all students across NYC.
Q: What would you want supporters to understand about the importance of this marathon fundraising effort and the difference it will make for students and educators across New York City?
A: I want people to understand that by supporting me, they are helping students across the city gain access to quality afterschool programs which not only reinforce the skills they learn throughout the school day, but also spark the joy of learning that takes place well beyond the classroom.
